That is not a joke. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault known as “the doomsday vault” has been flooded by melting ice. This vault was designed to preserve humanities food source in the case of a natural or man-made disaster.
The vault was sealed in 2008 on the northern Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, buried beneath thick permafrost which was said to provide the vault with “impregnable protection“.
While the seed bank itself was not compromised, the entrance tunnel was flooded with ice water, raising serious concerns about its ability to withstand the apocalypse.
The vault was supposed to be self-sustaining but now is being monitored 24 hours a day. Pumps have been installed to remove the water and work is underway to make the entrance tunnel waterproof.
Wait, I know what you’re thinking: “The arctic doomsday vault designed to last for decades through nuclear fallout wasn’t waterproof? What?”
Yes, that is the situation in a nutshell.
So, have we vastly overestimated the capabilities of our overlords, or is this some kind of global warming hoax?
Frankly, I’m going to take this at face value, if only for the sheer absurdity of it.
